Many female travelers wonder if it's safe to travel to New York alone. Believe it or not, New York City is very safe for those traveling alone. Of course, this city went through difficult times during the COVID-19 pandemic and is still recovering from those challenges. And I'm not going to say that New York City is perfect when it comes to crime.
At the end of the day, crime is a multifaceted social and economic issue that I cannot respond to as a travel blogger. Yes, New York is absolutely safe for women traveling alone. I'm a woman and I've been walking alone in New York since I was about 17 years old. I have never been assaulted, deceived, scammed or robbed and I don't really know many people who have done it.
Whether you want to continue your yoga practice or try an activity you can't find at home, you'll have fun, be healthy, and be mistaken for a New Yorker. As I said, many new and avant-garde designers try to “make their names known to the public” by opening stores in New York, which means that you can buy clothes that no one else in your social circle owns. With a strong safety record and a million things to do, see and experience, New York City is a favorite destination for women traveling alone. Staten Island and parts of New Jersey (Jersey City, Hoboken) are perfectly safe and cheap, but they aren't comfortable at all.
It has a lot of interesting things to do, it's designed for people who spend time alone and it's a very safe destination where common sense will keep you even safer. There are so many people caught up against each other in New York that it's common for residents to seek solitude outside their homes, not inside them. If you avoid them (and as you can see, none of them endanger your life), you'll avoid danger on your trip to New York and you'll be very safe all the time. New York may not be as safe as Reykjavik or Tokyo, where you can leave your wallet in a bank and no one will touch it, but it's certainly safer than Paris or Barcelona, where you have to be constantly watching out for pickpockets.
For example, I loved climbing to the top of the Empire State Building and seeing New York from the top of the rock, at Rockefeller Center. Whether you're spending 2 days in New York or an entire week, you'll discover at least one museum that suits your personal interests. Broadway is one of the main reasons I love New York City, and I advocate that people traveling alone come and visit it. But in reality it follows a larger trend: the crime rate has been falling in New York City for years and years.
