Most nights of the week, and even late at night, you'll find it hard to get a seat on the New York subway. The bottom line is that the more people around you in a city like New York, whether you're walking through the streets, waiting, riding or getting off a train, the less likely you are to be a victim. The subway is generally very safe. After midnight there are fewer people traveling and fewer trains running, but mostly they are people who are moving after long days of work, who go home from bars or homeless people who sleep.
Stay alert, but the chances of something unpleasant happening are very low. Many commercial areas in the city, such as the Financial District, tend to be deserted after business hours. The fewer people there are in an area, the less safe it will be for the visitor. It's especially important to be vigilant on the New York subway and, if possible, avoid taking the train late at night.
John DeCarlo, professor of criminal justice at the University of New Haven, highlighted that the ramifications of crime in the subway go far beyond the incidents themselves and endanger the system that allows traffic and commerce in the country's most populous city. It may seem tempting to take a walk through Central Park at dusk, but it's safer to wait for the sun to rise. A series of thrusts, stab wounds and shootings on trains have attracted public attention and, just days before the midterm elections, safety in the state subway has become a key issue in the unexpectedly tight race for governor. From workers to street musicians and merchants, people whose livelihoods depend on the system offered a complex portrait of the subway as the number of passengers approaches the pre-pandemic normality.
Remember that “how safe New York is for tourists” doesn't matter if you ignore all the precautions, so since New York is considered one of the safest cities in the world to travel to, as a tourist in a busy and unfamiliar area, you should be careful in any city that is considered safe to visit. If you travel by subway, try to stay in cars where there are a lot of people instead of choosing an empty car. I'm going to visit New York for a few days and I was talking to a local about the subway system and they told me that it can become dangerous after midnight on the subway. This year, violent crime on the subway represents only about 2.6 percent of New York City's total, but the randomness of many attacks has made passengers afraid.
That said, that doesn't mean that tourists in this city, like any other, shouldn't be careful to stay safe. For 22 years, and working as a security representative for Local 100 of the Transportation Workers Union, he said the system became “illegal” at the height of the pandemic. Workers, vendors, merchants and street musicians may be specially trained to assess subway problems and promises.
